From 20 to 22 April 2022, in Warsaw (Poland) ELFA finally resumed its Annual General Meeting and Conference in a face-to-face format, after two years of celebrating it online due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a welcome drink on Wednesday evening in the beautiful “Sala Kolumnowa” at the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw (Poland), on Thursday 21st April the sessions of the Conference began. The event started with some welcoming words by Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, Tomasz Giaro, Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Marek Grzybowski, President of ELFA.

The key note speech “Current problems relating to human rights protection in Poland” was offered by Marcin Wiącek, Polish Human Rights Ombudsman. After that, the ELFA Award ceremony took place, in which Laurence Gormley presented the First Prize thesis, entitled “Integration through Law and its Discontents Unveiling the distributive impact of judge-made law in the EU”, by Dr. Leticia Díez Sánchez, and the Proxime Accessit thesis, “Till Residence Card Do Us Part? The Concept of Marriages of Convenience and EU Free Movement Law: The Case of the United Kingdom”, by Dr. Aleksandra Jolkina.

Afterwards, the morning session was devoted to the European Journal of Legal Education, the ELFA flagship platform for lecturers and educators in law sciences (www.ejle.eu). Greta Bosch, Editor-in-Chief of the EJLE, and Izabela Krasnicka, Deputy Editor, presented the 3rd Issue of the Journal (you may find the presentation below), and led the Panel discussion “Developments in Legal Education – Online Legal Education, Learning and Teaching”.

In the afternoon, two interesting panel sessions took place, the first dedicated to “Innovative Practices and Modern Trends in Legal Education”, and the second to “Artificial Intelligence and the Law”. After that, in the evening, all participants enjoyed the gala dinner offered at the magnificent halls of the Royal Castle, located in the Warsaw historical centre.

The session on Friday morning started with a stimulating round table on the “Trends and Challenges of American Model of Law School”, with the participation of members of SEALS.

Finally, the ELFA Annual General Meeting took place. During the meeting, among other issues, the date of the 2023 AGM was announced: it will take place in Lausanne from 12 to 14 April 2023 (save the date!). Andreas R. Ziegler was elected as new president of ELFA and Barbara Pozzo and Izabela Kraśnicka were appointed as two new members of the Board of Directors.

The members representatives attending the meeting, above other decisions, agreed to suspend the membership of the Russian universities that signed the statement of the Russian Union of Rectors supporting the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. Their membership will remain suspended until they comply again with the core values of ELFA.
